The Fight Continues
I know it’s been a minute since I’ve posted, but life has been lifing something serious. This story of Shanora Williams, a Black traditionally published author is not an uncommon one for Black authors who are either indie, hybrid, or traditional. The obstacles Black authors face reminds me of why I take my platform so seriously and do not take my influence for granted. When the publishing industry fails our authors by not giving them equitable opportunities, it is the community that shows up and shows out. As a community, it is up to us to show up for our authors who continue to tell our stories, even as they face adversity. Let’s turn out and support Shanora Williams on her latest release. Let’s continue to call out the publishing space for the racism it consistently pushes masked behind “Black books don’t sell” or “Black readers don’t read”. You’s a boldface lie. You should expect us, because we’re coming!
